What's different about heat pumps
A heat pump is essentially an AC that can run in reverse — pulling heat from outside air in the winter and dumping it inside, instead of the other way around. The component that makes that possible is the reversing valve. When reversing valves fail (stuck in cooling mode, stuck in heating mode, or fluttering between them), the system loses one mode of operation entirely. That's a heat-pump-specific repair.
Heat pumps also have defrost controls — when outdoor coils ice up in cold weather, the system briefly reverses to melt the ice, then resumes heating. Bad defrost boards or sensors cause poor heating performance and high electric bills.
